O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her birthplace was in Detroit in Michigan. She was the child of Jim and Jan as a financial planner. She appeared as a model in commercials for some time before moving out into Los Angeles. The first role she had was modeling as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC drama China Beach with Dana Delany. She also guest starred on a number of other shows as well as appeared in made-for films and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the squad between 1993 and 1996. The actress was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for every year. With her fellow cast members, she received the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Performance of the Ensemble of a Drama Series.
