O'Neil, who was still in high school year during the auditions, volunteered for Canadian Idol's 3rd season within the early months of 2005. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement about her performance. O'Neil was praised by the jury. But she lost badly in both the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked, and they recommended that the public decide for Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. After two more breathtaking performances on the 7th of September 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, judge Werner reported that newspapers in the early morning will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
